Twisters Add Former NFL Defender
LITTLE ROCK, AR-- The Arkansas Twisters have agreed to terms with former Miami Dolphins and Clemson defensive linemen Phillip Merling for the upcoming season. The former NFL defender agreed to a multi-year agreement with Twisters.
Merling (6'5", 317lb, Clemson) will lead a talented Twisters defensive group. Merling will be joined on the defensive line by Antoine Miles (6'3", 245lb, Purdue), Brian Slay (6'3", 240lb, NC State), Donald Davis (6'2", 240lb, Pasadena City), Ke'Tyrus Marks (6'3", 300lb, Samford), Addison Elliott (6'3", 275lb, Southwestern), and Nicholas Williams (6'4", 265lb, APBU).
As a collegiate player, Merling appeared in 38 games at Clemson, starting his final 26. He delivered 146 tackles (99 solos), 12 sacks for minus 80 yards, 31 stops for losses totaling 152 yards, and 45 quarterback pressures.
Merling was selected in the second round, 32nd overall, of the 2008 draft by the Miami Dolphins. In Week 17 of the 2008 season, he intercepted a Brett Favre pass and returned it for a touchdown, helping the Dolphins clinch the 2008 AFC East Division championship.
